1. 24MP is a LOT of pixels. My poor 2011-MBA has been brought to its knees doing very basic editing on a RAW file in Aperture 3.3. Besides, shooting RAW-only, an 8GB SD card can only manage 217 shots.

2. The camera itself is solid. Though the plastic feels noticeably cheaper than say the D90 it feels well constructed none-the-less. Buttons have a good clicky feel and are very ergonomically laid-out.

3. The 18-55mm lens it ships with (as part of the kit) is appallingly bad. Given how many people just stick to this and don’t bother with other lenses, I’d think Nikon would provide better glass as the default lens. Autofocus is slow and you have to crank up the ISO to get a decent picture indoors. I’d recommend picking up the 35mm f/1.8G along with the camera itself.

4. Coming from a point-and-shoot, this camera is amazingly configurable. I’m still figuring out each option’s utility one-by-one, which can keep you busy for weeks on end. It’s good to play around with all the options to get an idea of what this camera is capable of.

5. The 39-point AF system is a great addition at this price point. This is of course superceded by the 51-point system introduced with the D7100, however it adds great flexibility while composing close-ups and macro shots.

6. I’m still awaiting my prime and wide-angle lenses and will continue to update this piece as I play with the camera over the next few weeks.
